What is Station Area Planning?
A Station area plan is an integrated land use and transportation plan focused on the area directly surrounding a rapid transit station (an approximate 10-minute walking distance). Special policies and guidelines may be adopted for station areas that are different than those adopted for the rest of the municipality. The focus of a station area plan is also integrate transit services within a neighbourhood. They are primarily used to encourage more attractive compact, pedestrian and transit-friendly development.
Station Area Planning Pilot Project
A The Charles/Ottawa Street intersection in Kitchener (one of several potential rapid transit stations) was chosen because it provides a good mix of stable lands such as partks, heritage buildings and residential neighbourhoods, as well as areas with reurbanization potential.
This project has provided great insight into the opportunities and constraints involved in station area planning. It is the first step in identifying the process and principles that will be used around future rapid transit station areas throughout Waterloo Region.
Station Area Plan Pilot Project Open House
On April 3, 2008 an Open House for the Station Area Plan Pilot Project was held at the Rockway Centre in Kitchener from 5 to 8 p.m. This event was held to present the final report for the Station Area Plan Pilot Project and exhibit the types of long-term planning that will occur around future rapid transit stations, as well as what a conceptual station area might look like. Over 100 people attended this open house and provided feedback on the project.
